The Eco-Graph Meter and Eight Warning Signs
This section briefly explains how the system gives drivers instructions in real
time.
First, you start the engine and begin moving.
Then you see the eco-graph meter's pointer deflect off the scale and the "SHIFT"
sign appears.
 |
You may be surprised because the
system tells you to shift up much sooner than you usually do.
The MHS-01 constantly checks the engine performance of your vehicle so that it
can tell you what action you should take for peak driving performance. In other
words, the system always checks which gear you should use to achieve the most
economical, environmentally friendly driving practices. |
Now the "SHIFT" sign disappears and you see the
"ECO" sign. With this sign, the pointer either disappears or stays in
the green zone. The system is telling you that you are driving economically without
wasting fuel.
Enjoying the pleasant drive, you inadvertently depress the gas pedal a bit too
strongly. The eco-graph meter's pointer instantaneously moves through the yellow
zone, and goes into the red zone. The system warns you that you are wasting fuel.
The "ACCELE" sign also appears.
You start releasing the gas pedal, yet the vehicle is still driving at an extralegal
speed. Then the warning sign changes to the "SPEED" sign. The system
shows this sign if the vehicle is moving above the preprogrammed speeds. Two speeds,
one for ordinary driving and the other for speed driving, can be programmed.
"Oh, no, I have to slowdown." You strongly depress the brake pedal. At
the same time, the "DECELE" sign appears.Smooth action is a basic of
eco-driving. If you have to slowdown your vehicle, do so as smoothly as possible
except for an emergency.

|
The "IDLING" sign appears
if you idle the engine for a certain period of time in non-traffic situations. |
 |
The "RUN IDLE" sign appears
for excessive idling caused by depressing the gas pedal in non-traffic situations. |
Now you see a slope ahead. You depress the
gas pedal to climb the slope, anticipating the deflection of the eco-graph meter's
pointer to the red zone. But the pointer remains in the green zone.
The MHS-01 constantly checks road conditions. When the vehicle comes to a slope,
the system calculates the power required for climbing. As long as the car is moving
within that force, the pointer never deflects to the red zone even if you depress
the gas pedal.
On a downhill slope, however, the pointer instantaneously deflects to the red
zone if you press the gas pedal since no additional power is necessary for going
down.
If you drive continuously for almost four straight
hours, the "4h" sign appears on the screen, three hours forty minutes
and three hours fifty minutes after the start of driving. At the same time, the
system gives a voice message suggesting a break.
The MHS-01 thus guides drivers on how to achieve eco-driving by giving them specific,
real time instructions.
